The Civil War was the great developer of weapons. A. Lincoln himself encouraged adoption of the Henry Rifle and 2,000 Henrys were purchased by the War Department, and two regiments of Sherman’s “bummers” carried them during his march across Georgia. Southern writers referred to the Henry as “that damned Yankee rifle that is loaded on Sunday and fired all week”.
